The Adventure of Porting The World After to Mobile and Console
A long time ago, we told you about our plans to port The World After to mobile.
Technical challenges
As it happens, between the unsupported video format and Unity-related export problems, we never took the time to go through with the project, which wouldn’t have made a cent anyway (the market for premium mobile games is virtually non-existent outside of retro games). Lesly rebuilt the whole game from A to Z without the plugins we previously used that were problematic. After a while Lesly had a working IOS version, but then Google changed its rules for adding games to the Android Store, requiring him to start development all over again. This was both discouraging and frustrating, and we dropped the idea.
We also wanted to port the game to consoles in the meantime, thanks to this new version of the game. Only to be able to test it, we needed all the devkits for the different consoles, which requires a lot of paperwork and of course a lot of money (I can’t reveal the exact prices, but it’s a lot more expensive than a simple console). So we waited until we had the funds to embark on this adventure.
A new partnership
In the meantime, we were contacted by PixelHeart, who offered to take care of the console port as well as publishing and distribution!
And finally, after a lot of hard work (due to the plug-ins we used, again and again), The World After was released on Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series and on Nintendo Switch on March 28, 2024!
Three years after its release on PC and Mac, The World After is finally available on consoles. Many thanks to PixelHeart for their hard work, and we hope gamers enjoy the game as much as they did on Steam.
In any case, the lesson has been learned: the next game will be developed under Godot!
